Fourteen Sunflowers in a Vase, 1889, oil on canvas, 40 x 30.4 in / 101.6 x 77.3 cm Fourteen Sunflowers in a Vase, 1889” is one of many van Gogh paintings with similar names. It was painted in 1889 and is the one bought by the Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Company of Tokyo, Japan in 1995 for US$36.23 million. Few people are aware that of his 871 paintings, Vincent sold only one during his unusual lifetime — The Red Vineyard -- which he painted the year after this one and which was bought by a fellow artist who was the sister of a friend.

And although Fourteen Sunflowers in a Vase, 1889” may be Vincent's most popular and best-remembered painting, the year he painted it was among one of his most

traumatic and unfortunate. It was December of 1888 that he reportedly attempted to attack Paul Gauguin with a razor and later cut off the lower part of his left ear which he wrapped and gave to a prostitute in a brothel. So he began the year 1889 in hospital, receiving hydrotherapy treatment for epilepsy, dipsomania and schizophrenia. He moved into his famous yellow house on 7 January.

But in February he was in and out of hospital repeatedly, being treated for hallucinations, insomnia and the delusion someone was trying to poison him. In

March he was forced to be hospitalized again and his house was closed down because of a public petition to the mayor of Arles by a citizens group calling themselves the Cannibals of Arles and van Gogh the Redheaded Madman. When he returned home in April he found that floods had damaged his accommodations as well as his paintings and studies he had left there. In May he committed himself to a mental hospital but was still allowed to paint outdoors under supervision. When he visited Arles in July has has a severe attack while painting outdoors which left him unconscious for a period of time impaired his memory. He continued to paint numerous pictures but when he had  Vincent van Gogh in 1871.

another attack in August he attempted to swallow toxic paint and he was forbidden to paint — the only thing that gave him relief.

Vincent van Gogh worked as an artist for only ten years and six of those were as an apprentice. Only Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Pablo Picasso are more popular. However, he is the only one of these all time favorites that painted pictures that would bring some light into the houses of the poor. Most of the world's other top painters catered to rich patrons and powerful clients, creating art work for the elite few to buy in expensive exhibitions. We offer you this painting to help fulfill Vincent's vision and mission of creating art for all.
